Desert Tortoise Food
Food is one of the important aspects of tortoise care. It is important to feed healthy and fresh food to a pet desert tortoise to keep it healthy and in good shape. These are herbivore animals and love to feed on grasses. Desert tortoise diet mainly consists of safe grasses, weeds and leafy greens with small amount of hard vegetables and moist fruits. One can grow grasses and weeds in the backyard so that the desert tortoise can graze on it. The desert tortoise enclosure can be made more decorative by placing plants that desert tortoises love to eat.
The desert tortoises mostly like to have grass, wildflowers and new-growths of different cacti in their diet. They usually eat plants that are available to them and mostly eat herbaceous perennial plants. The types of wildflowers that desert tortoise prefer in their diet are coreopsis, phaselis, spurge, lupines, forget-me-not and lotus. In dry seasons desert tortoise mostly feeds on dry plants. You can also provide packaged food to pet desert tortoise.

Snacks for desert tortoise: You can include Apples, Apricot, Avocados, Bananas, Berries, Cantaloupe, Figs, Grapes, Mangos, Oranges, Papayas, Peaches, Pears, Plums or Tomatoes in desert tortoise snacks.

Occasional food for desert tortoise: There is some food that should be served occasionally to desert tortoise. Food such as Apples (without seeds), Apricots (without pits), Avocados (without pits or leaves), Bananas, Berries, Cantaloupe (with scrubbed rind), Figs, Grapes, Mangos (without pit), Oranges (not for hatchlings), papayas, Peaches (without pit), Pears (without seeds), Plums, and Tomatoes (not for hatchlings) can be served occasionally to your pet desert tortoise.
Water is equally important for your pet desert tortoise. You should provide clean and fresh water to your desert tortoise to keep them healthy. An adult tortoise can live up to one year without water. Water can be provided to them through vegetables as well. The water should be served in a large shallow dish so that they can drink water easily from it.
You should feed your desert tortoise with balanced diet to ensure a healthy growth of your pet desert tortoise. Fresh and clean food should be given to the pet desert tortoise. The dishes and enclosure of desert tortoise should be cleaned regularly in order to avoid bacterial growth.
