One can also use Sand, peat moss or other floor covering in the incubator. It is not necessary for every incubator as it is a matter of personal preference. The ideal temperature for incubation of eggs is between 85° and 90° F. At this temperature tortoise eggs will usually hatch if fertile. At times incubator requires a 40-Watt bulb or more to hatch tortoise eggs. Eggs should be kept at proper distant in the incubator to avoid hot spots on the eggs. It can be kept at a distance of 8-10 inches or more. It is essential for one to maintain proper interior temperature so that eggs can hatch easily.
Before placing tortoise eggs in incubator let it heat completely for several hours. One should check the thermometer from time to time before deciding which size light is best. At times light can burn during incubation, therefore it is advisable to keep a spare light on hand. Some tortoise eggs take 70 days to hatch and other take 100 days to hatch. The average hatching time of tortoise eggs is about 85 to 90 days. Provide proper time, temperature and environment to tortoise eggs to hatch. Tortoise eggs should be handled gently before placing them in incubator. The baby tortoise can take 2 weeks or longer to start eating. Baby tortoise and mother tortoise should be fed with healthy food.
