- Your tortoise may ram into your precious furniture and the children’s toys. If you have a bed of flowers it will surely roll over it and other bedding plants. These large tortoises are amazingly destructive and will need a large area of your garden to confine them. You will need a very large tortoise housing to if you want to keep a large tortoise as pet
- You will have to take care of your floor if it is a wooden one. If you even want to move your pet tortoise away, you cannot just shove it. You will have to manually lift it and push it. Considering the large weight and it’s size, you will have to rethink
- You will need to pick up and carry your huge pet or tilt is safely to one side to check its carapace. This you will have to do occasionally to check if all is nice and healthy down there
- You will have to consider a reptile vet knowledgeable about tortoise care, diagnosis and treatment about your pet giant tortoise. Cause someone with knowledge of reptiles and that to of small tortoises will not do.
- In case your vet is not a mobile vet or does not make house calls, you will have to think about soma mode of transportation. You will have to take charge of your pet tortoise and ride to your vet. For this you will have to have a very big car to transport you and your pet. In case you do not have a big car, you cannot find a friend who has one and will drive you and your pet every time you need to ride to your vet. You cannot take your large pet tortoise in a taxi or a bus.
- Your pet may get respiratory infections during winter; you should be ready to administer the necessary antibiotics. You will have to take utmost care of your pet tortoise and devote a lot of attention to it. You will have to bear up with the agitation, digging and ramming behavior of your pet tortoise during the breeding season or when they get bored.
The bottom line is, you will have to reconsider your decision of having a large tortoise pet. You cannot have one just because some one is breeding them and they are easily available. Sucaltas and other large tortoise species are a risk to the pet owners. You should understand the scope of what you are taking on before you buy that cut little baby tortoise or a hatchling.
