Tortoise FoodIt is essential for one to feed balanced and nutritional food to their pet tortoise to sustain its health. One should empty and clean the dish at the end of each day. Tortoise should be fed on a plate or other flat surface because it is difficult for tortoise to pick food from deep bowls. The amount of food you should offer to your pet tortoise depends on its size, condition, health. Food is essential for the normal functioning of tortoise. For example, Tortoise with shell length below 2" require 1/2 cup of food per day whereas tortoise with shell length 12 – 16'' require 2 cups food to survive.

There are certain things that one should avoid feeding to their tortoise. Make sure that your tortoise can’t find them and eat them on his own. Things that should not be included in your tortoise food are mentioned below.

Since every tortoise requires different food to survive, therefore it is advisable to consult a vet about what to feed and how much to feed. Eating habit of common pet tortoise is mentioned below.

  • Burmese mountain tortoise: It is a good idea to feed Burmese mountain tortoise with minimal grasses but lots of clover, plantain, dandelions and other broadleaf weeds. Green vegetables, cactus, cauliflower, yams and squashes can also be served to Burmese mountain tortoise. This tortoise loves to have fruits and worms in their diet.
  • African spurred tortoise: This types of tortoise requires a very high fiber food to survive. A lack of dietary fiber will lead to digestive tract disturbance, diarrhea and much increased susceptibility to flagellate and worm problems. Avoid feeding fruits to this type of tortoise regularly as this will result in similar problems and can also result in severe colic. One can serve fruits as an occasional treat. It should not form a regular part of the diet for this species. This type of tortoise requires daily access to a natural grazing area and likes to feed on mixed grasses, hibiscus and clover. They require calcium D3 supplement because of their prodigious rate of growth.
  • Elongate tortoise: One should provide hydrated cat pellets with vitamins and calcium to this tortoise. Snakes, snails, worms can also be included with green leafy vegetables and fruits in your tortoise’s diet.
  • Spider tortoise: Since they are herbivorous animals, therefore one should provide fruits and vegetables in their diet. They can eat all types of fruits and vegetable.
  • Leopard tortoise: one should provide high fiber food to this type of tortoise. One should avoid feeding fruits and soft food to this tortoise as it leads to colic.

Food such as grape leaves, grass, roses, zucchini, succulents, squash nasturtium and hibiscus are good for pet tortoise. One should offer fresh and clean water to drink to their pet tortoise. The dishes and enclosure of your pet should be cleansed regularly in order to avoid bacterial growth.
