Tortoise InformationTortoise is a land dwelling reptile most of whose body is shielded by a shell. Tortoises are a member of the Testudines family. They are heavy, bulky and large in size and usually love to stay at one place. The size of tortoise can vary from a few centimetres to two - three meters. Since they are strong animal, therefore they live a long life. Tortoises can live up to 80 to 150 years. Tortoises are mostly found in America and Africa.

You should fulfil the basic requirements of your pet tortoise to keep it healthy. There are several things that are essential for you to provide to your tortoise to keep it healthy. It is essential for you to provide clean environment, water and food to the tortoise. You should fulfil the basic requirements of your pet tortoise to keep them comfortable and in good shape.

Requirements of a tortoise:

  1. Enclosure for tortoise: It is essential for you to provide proper and comfortable enclosure to your Pet tortoise. Different species requires different enclosure to stay in. It can be a tank, terrarium, cage or aquarium and it can be indoor or outdoor. Habitat preferences of tortoise are species specific. It should be designed according to your tortoise requirements. It must contain proper space so that your pet tortoise can stay, relax and eat properly. It should not be small as small enclosures can lead to slow growth of your pet tortoise. It is important for you to maintain cleanliness in your pet enclosure.
  2. Breeding tortoise: Make sure that both sexes are sexually matured and healthy for breeding process. You should provide proper habitat and food to the adult tortoise. Female tortoise require suitable egg deposition site. Tortoise must be provided with suitable extended temperature regime and natural photoperiod throughout the year before the breeding process. Like turtles, tortoise also lays eggs in the water. Tortoise eggs should be incubated in an efficient incubator. Incubation can take 45 days or it may take a year or longer. The incubation temperatures vary by species however, it is usually between 78 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. It is important for you to incubate the tortoise eggs in a incubator for the proper time and at an adequate temperature
  3. Food for tortoise: It is significant for owner to provide fresh and healthy food to his pet tortoise. Things such as Apple seeds, Bananas, Beans, Cabbage, Cat food, Chard, Dog food, Iceberg lettuce, Peas, Sprouts, Spinach, and Watermelon should not be included in your tortoise diet as they are dangerous for tortoise. Tortoises enjoy feeding on peas and beans, lettuce, cabbage, carrot or turnip. Fruits such as banana, plum and strawberry can also be included in their food.

The above mentioned information will help you in sustaining the health of your pet tortoise. Make sure that the environment you provide to your tortoise is clean and healthy. It is important for you to fulfil basic requirements of your pet tortoise.
