Bird HouseBird houses are artificial nesting spaces for birds to live in. Bird houses can be the shape of a barn or variations like the nesting shelves and platforms. These houses provide a very good scope to study birding for scientists and bird watchers. Around 50 species of birds nest in the birdhouses and not all houses are appropriate for all breeds of birds. Since the nesting nature and physical and behavioral needs vary from one bird to another, houses of birds must be made based on the living habits of a certain specie of bird.

Apart from acting as a tool for scientific research or a source of learning the various bird habits, the bird houses can contribute to conservation of exotic species of birds, especially in urban or semi-urban regions where birds find the difficulty of finding proper nesting space. The following are some information on bird houses.

Information on Bird Houses
  • As already mentioned the houses of birds should be made in a style that would give space to specific specie of bird. There are many birds that can live in any type of house but there are some species that would prefer to live in a house that resembles their natural habitat. Some birds may like to reside in a house that has only one compartment with a single entrance. While there are many other species that live in colonies in a group of 30 to 40 and would prefer to reside in partitioned compartments.
  • While buying or making a bird house keep in mind that more than the aesthetic beauty of the house a bird is more concerned about its safety and comfort. So, make sure that the dimensions of the house are appropriate for the bird to reside in. You must also be careful of the right height and width of the entrance hole, ventilation, drainage and other accessibility factors. The house must protect the bird from the predators as well.
  • As a tip to make the house secured from predators you are recommended not to keep any perches around the house as this would provide a platform to the predators to get inside. The roof should be slanting in order to get rid of the rain water or accumulated snow.
  • The houses must ideally be attached to posts, building or tree tops. For some houses like the ones of blue birds must be attached to tree trunks, where the birds would be safe from raccoons or other predators like cats.
  • The entrance holes of the song birds must not be more than 1 3/8 inches in order to make it resistant to starlings and house sparrows.
  • The wood used for making the houses must not be pressure treated lumber woods as when they get wet their vapors may turn out be poisonous for the birds. You may use paint to coat the external part of the house especially the back part, but never paint the inside walls as they can also be toxic for the bird.
