The canaries cage should have some horizontal bars set at different heights as they love to hop from one perch to another, this ability makes a round cage unstable for them.

Bars in the cage should be no wider than 12mm, in order to prevent escape. Canaries that are kept indoors should be let out of their cage daily to exercise at least once in a day. Covering your bird’s cage at night will encourage your birds to settle down for sleep.

Often, the life span of the pet canaries varies widely. If the pet canaries receive good care, they can live up to more then 10 years.

What do pet canaries like to have in their daily diet?

Canaries in the wild environment feed with a wide range of seeds, grains, and vegetation. A specially formulated canary mix makes a proper and good diet but some supplements may also be required.

Small pieces of fresh fruits and vegetables should be given as treats. The fresh drinking water should be always made available for the canaries. Certain foods like lettuce, avocado, potato, lemon or any sweets or drinks may be very harmful for the health of your birds, so avoid giving them.

Cuttle fish should be provided to canaries that help to provide extra calcium and the grit should be given which aid in digestion. Occasionally, egg food should be provided to your canaries. Providing a balanced and a healthy diet to your birds ensures to maintain their color and especially it is good for breeding and pregnant birds.

How to breed pet canaries?

Canaries can be mated from the age of 9 months and can produce a clutch of 4-6 eggs in about 14 days. As like other pets, breeding canaries also require much commitment of time and effort. Therefore, it is always recommended that you seek an expert advice and do an appropriate research before considering keeping a breeding pair. You should breed canaries only when you are confident enough in this job.

What are the different types of canaries which can be kept as pet?

Canaries come in assorted breeds, marking, and colors. The common breeds of the canaries are gloster coroner, fife, crested and Yorkshire. The typical markings of canaries include clear yellow, white, buff and brown variegated.

Are canaries bred for their color and type?

Nowadays canaries are almost found in every color except the true blue color. While it is reported that the canaries with a black color are also developed, but they are rare. Modern canneries come in a wide range of colors including yellow, white, blue, red, and many other shades.

Canaries that are bred specifically for the color are referred to as “colorbred canaries.” In addition to the basic colors, the colorbreed canaries include subsets named for various mutation such as ino, mosaic, opal, satinette and many more. The breeds which are developed for their shape and conformation are known as “type canaries.” This include popular breed of canaries such as fife, gloster, Yorkshire and many others.
