Canary DiseasesWhile buying new birds – whether it is a canary bird or any other bird- one should always check for any disease in the bird, before you spend your money. Also, remember, some times the disease can spread from one bird to other, so you should take care.

The best way to prevent the various canary diseases is to provide your canaries with a healthy diet and proper living conditions. If you cannot recognize the diseases, do not worry, we are here to help you. This article will discuss some of the most common conditions of canaries at which they cause problems or diseases.

Parasitic Mites in canary

There are several types of parasitic mites that can affect the health of your canary bird, which includes feather mites, air sac mites, red mites, and scaley mites.

Feather mites :These type of mites spots holes in the feathers of canaries and in some of the severe cases can even cause baldness. If your canary birds have bald spots, your bird may have these mites. So, be sure to spread out the wing of the bird in front of a bright light. If you see tiny holes in the shaft of the feathers, your bird have feather mites. Canaries will turn the shafts of the feathers into Swiss cheese!

Air sac mites : These mites live in the lungs of the canary birds. In addition, these parasites are very difficult to detect. With a heavy infestation, your canary bird will make a clicking noise. Usually, these mites will not kill the birds but they can make your canaries lethargic. Generally, the air sac mites are passed on from the parents to the young one; when they feed them in the nest.

Red mites : Red mites are the little bloodsuckers, which live under and around the cages in crevices. They come out only at night to feed on the birds. Normally, they are hardly visible. After, red mites are fed; they can be seen as small red dots. At night, cover your canary cage with a white fabric; in the morning, you may able to see red mites.

Scaley mites (leg and face) : In older canaries, scaley (mites) feet are common. However, if the canary bird is 1-2 years old and has scaley feet, probably it is suffering from scaley mite’s disease.

Tape worms condition in canary :Usually, tapeworms cause problems with canary birds that are kept outside in the cage. They can infect your canaries, when they ingest an infected insect. Once the worm gets in the body of bird, it eats or has their nutrients from the bird’s food, which results in malnourishment. As the tapeworm multiply, they can cause a life-threatening blockage in the digestive tract of canaries.

Pox condition in canary : Pox is one of the most serious canary diseases. This viral infection is transmitted to the birds via wild birds and through the mosquitoes. Most of the canaries’ experience crusty sores around their beak, eyes and feet. The diseases can also cause lesions to develop on the larynx, tongue, and pharynx. There is no cure of the pox illness. In most of the cases, it proves to be fatal.

Constipation condition in canary :Constipation is a less serious illness in the canaries. It is just like the condition, which affects humans. It is being characterized by your canary’s inability to pass droppings. You can help your canaries to relieve out of the condition by feeding him with green vegetables and fruits. Two of the most common vegetables used to relieve from this symptoms are watercress and lettuce.
