Bird Baths
If you want to attract birds to your garden and see them flocking and making merry, you must fix up bird baths in your garden. The bird baths are nothing but shallow basins containing water. Birds would be seen splashing and drinking water from these water sources. In fact, a bird bath is more effective in attracting birds than a feeder or a bird house. There are many birds that build their own nests and would not accept a man made one. Again birds such as waxwings, cat birds and wrens mainly feed on fruits and insects rather than seeds. Unlike the feeders the water baths attract all the species of birds including robins, warbles, thrushes, bluebirds, catbirds and many others.
Birds mainly come to the baths to drink water and also to clean themselves up. They generally splash water while cleaning in order to get rid of the dirt stuck in their wings. Many birds also bring their chicks with them to wash them up after their first session of plumage. The following are the types of bird baths that are usually available in stores or online shopping portals.
Types of Baths for Birds
Shallow Baths – The shallow baths are usually no deeper than three inches in the center. The edges of the baths are even shallower than the centre and enable the bird to easily make its way through the centre.
Rough Bottomed Baths – Birds always prefer to stand on rough floors as that provides them to have a good grasp. Slippery or smooth surfaces are never liked. A cemented base of a bath is good for the birds to stand on it but would be quite heavy for the stand to hold the basin for a long period of time. Nowadays, fiber or resin bottomed baths are quite light weighted and have a rough texture to make the birds feel secured.
Sprinkly Water Baths – Not all birds like to wade through the centre of the basin and splash water. Some birds such as the humming birds love to bathe while in flight. They would fly into the dripping basin with a definite timing so as to receive a drop of water on their back every time they fly inside the bath.
If you find that the bird baths are too deep for the birds to wade through, you can increase the level of the bottom by filling the base with some stones or gravels. But in that case you have to take extra care of the bath in order to keep it clean. You are also advised to change the water of the baths at regular intervals. The baths must always contain fresh water so that mosquitoes and other insects are not allowed to breed in.
Try to place the baths for the birds in such a location that would be safe from predators like cats. Do not keep the baths close to any shrub as the cats usually hide in the shrubs or nearby bushes before pouncing on to the birds. The elevation of the bird baths must also be of a height that would enable the birds to be aware of the approach of cats beforehand.
