Bird House Plan
If you are a bird watcher and keen to learn the nestling habits of birds, studying a bird house would be a good idea for you. But you must at first make sure of the type of bird you want to study as not all birds live in bird houses neither all birds are able to live in a specific type of house. Depending upon the behavioral and physical nature of the bird the house must be constructed by keeping in mind the nature of comfort and security that is required by the particular specie of bird. So, while making or purchasing a bird house you are recommended to do research on the nesting habits of the bird. The following table shows some bird house plans ideal for particular species of birds.
Bird House Plan Information
| Bird Name | Dimension of the Floor | The Height of the House | The Height of the Hole above the Floor

| | Blue Bird | 5x5 inches | 8 inches | 6 inches
| | Golden Fronted Wood Pecker | 6x6 inches | 12-15 inches | 9-12 inches
| | Wood Duck | 10x18 | 10-24 inches | 12-16 inches
| | House Finch | 6x6 inches | 6 inches | 4 inches

The following are the factors that you must be focusing while planning and building the structure of the house.
The nest boxes are to be constructed with the cedar wood. Other woods like the lumbered ones can be toxic for the birds if they get wet.
The dimensions of the entrance holes in the bird house plan should be drilled according to the size of the bird. Generally the holes should be of 1.5 inches in diameter.
To promote fledging for climbing try to make the surface of the wood rough with the help of a chisel.
The house must have an opening through which cleaning can be done easily. Generally, the roof of the house acts as a lid that can be removed for cleaning.
The bottom of the box must also have good drainage system so that the fecal matters and water do not get accumulated inside the house and cause spread of diseases. There must be at least three or four holes of one fourth inch dimension drilled at the bottom of the house.
The house must also have good ventilation provision.
Introduce a predator guard and attach it to the pole that should be 6 to 12 inches below the bottom of the box.
In case you are making a blue bird house make sure of fitting a galvanized metal sheet for predator guard.
Make the roof slanting so that the rain or snow does not stand on top of the roof.
The entrance for the bluebirds must be small enough to allow the birds to get in while restricting predators to access the eggs and chicks of the birds.
Since the bird houses serve as an excellent scope of learning about the nestling of birds, you may introduce a miniature camera inside the house to see the various activities of the birds. At the same time make sure that the comfort and the privacy of the bird is not hampered by developing a good bird house plan.
