Australian Kelpie




Australian Kelpies originated in Australia during the 1870’s, when they were created to help mange sheep. Since the wool industry played a very important role in the economic development of the countrym the need for strong, intelligent working dogs was paramount, The breed descended from a mix of working Collies including Border Collies and Bearded Collies, by way of Scotland. Some debate still exists as to whether wild dingo blood also contributed to the mix.

The Kelpies tolerated the challenging environmental conditions and manages the stocks with avariety of herding techniques, including staring, biting and barking. Although used most extensively as working dogs in their native home, the dedicated yet independent temperament of the Australian Kelpie has spread its reputation as a companion across the globe.

AUSTRALIAN KELPIE BREED CHARACTERISTICS

Size: Males 20 to 23 inches. Females 17 to 20 inches ( at the withers).

Appearance: Muscular, fit, rugge body with effortless motin.

Coat and Color: Short, flat, straight coat, with longer hair around the neck, tail and thighs. Black bluem redm fawn or tan color with or without tan or minimal white markings.

Head: Slightly rounded, broad skull with a tapered muzzle’ medium-sized, almond-shaped, wide-set, gold to dark brown eyes; fine, broad tipped, slightly curved ears.

Tail: Gently curved.
