Buying Trained Dog

Be very careful of purchasing dogs that are advertised as trained, especially guard dogs or those required for security work. A dog cannot be very well trained if it will just go to any person; certainly no dog that is worth its salt will do so. However, if you are tempted, insist on having the dog examined by your own veterinary surgeon, not that of the person selling the dog. This will mean that the dog must be with you a few days, because the temperature of a dog always goes up when transferred from one owner to another, which means that it will be a day or two before you can take the animal to the ‘vet’, and during this period you can ascertain whether the dog will suit you. In other words, you have the dog on trial for a few days. If this procedure is not followed the advertised dog, described as trained, may not like his new owner or the owner the dog, and useless expense will have been entailed.

Those people who desire a security dog and have little or no idea how to acquire or train such a dog should employ the services of a professional security dog trainer and get him to obtain a suitable dog of about ten to twelve months old. The owner should attend during the whole of the training course.
