Can a horse be kept alone?
Generally all animals, if kept as pets, come in pair but, what about a horse? Have you ever thought about how can a horse be kept alone? If you are thinking of keeping a horse alone then you must know that it is quite perilous as they are herd animals. They need someone to accompany them as long time loneliness can affect their health and they might get depressed. The common signs of a lonely horse are that they usually start whinnying and pacing the fence lines when they feel lonely. This might lead to different ailments to your horse like ulcers, depression, behavioral problem, loss of appetite, biting or kicking girth, dull coat etc.
If the owner can’t afford time for his horse then he must accompany them with other animals. Make sure that your horse is enjoying the company that you provided him. Companion helps in making horses feel more secure. Moreover they provide emotional support and entertainment to horses. One can provide them company of donkey, Goat and llamas. They perform well if accompanied by these animals. The main disadvantage of a lonely horse is that they can flee and escape in search of company.
There are many signs that one can notice his lonely horse. One can easily judge the need of company in their horses by monitoring and examining their horse regularly. Lonely horse should not be ridden as it can put unnecessary strain on a horse’s legs. Your horse can also suffer from lameness id he would be left alone for a long period.
One can accompany them by providing a tub that is always full of hygienic water, hay to consume, pasture to graze to get them engage. You should engage them in such activities in order to make them feel good. One should allow their horses to graze land along with other animals as they will feel affectionate. They love to hang around with other animals so is a good idea to provide other animals to accompany them. If due to some reason you are forced to keep your horse alone then make sure that the place should not contain anything scary in it. Horses usually get scared with dogs, children, adult or any other scary things. Therefore, one should keep their horses at a distance from them as that may lead your horse to flee and escape.
Horses hardly accept loneliness so one should make sure that there horses are provided with good company. Horses can bear loneliness but only for a small time, they can’t survive if kept alone for a long time.
