Cat Choking
Choking may be caused by a bone or other foreign object in the mouth or throat. The cat with something stuck in its mouth or throat will try to cough or vomit it up. He may gasp or there may be bloody and foamy saliva. In serious cases, breathing may be stopped.
If breathing has stopped, apply artificial respiration. Try to get the cat to a vet for removal of the foreign object. If this is not possible, you will have to remove it. Have someone hold the cat, wrapped in blanket or coat. Grasp the cat’s lower jaw with your left hand, pushing its upper lips down over his teeth and holding them there with your fingers. Then tilt its head upward, so that the lower jaw hangs open. With the fingers of your right hand try to dislodge the bone or object. Work quickly and hold the cat’s mouth open during the entire pro-cadre. Reverse the directions if you are left-handed. Treat for shock. Get the cat to a veterinary surgeon.
