Cat Spaying

The female’s heat periods can be eliminated by having her ovaries removed. This operation is called spaying. It is a simple operation when done early, and the cat is indisposed for only a few days.

You may wonder about the advisability of having your female spayed. If, like many people, you have listened to false information about the operation, you may be set against it.

First of all, the operation is relatively safe. The cat is anaesthetisedand feels no pain. Spaying eliminates the heat periods and prevents theca from having unwanted kittens. Basically, it is an easy way of
Ridding the cat of most of the sexual behavior symptoms. Usually assayed female has no interest in tomcats. Furthermore, she tends to be gentler and more apt to remain at home.

Many people regard spaying as being “against nature”. Some may feel the operation, which prevents reproduction, to be against their religious laws. However, most religions have a lenient attitude towards paying animals. Other people believe that spaying a female will make her fat and lazy. There is no ground for this belief—any cat will become fat and lazy if overfed.
Aside from the pros and cons of the operation itself, there is practical argument in its favor. There are too many unwanted kittens in the world. Our cities abound with stray and homeless cats. Yet many people allow their female cats to mate and produce kittens for which there are no homes. Producing pedigree kittens for sale as pets or breeding stock is an entirely different matter, of course.

Spaying also eliminates certain diseased conditions, such as cystic ovaries. Diseased ovaries often cause a condition known as nymph-mania, in which the cat seems to be constantly in heat. Spaying will not make your cat mean or vicious. On the contrary, most spayed females become very docile and gentle. Spaying should be done at an early age, preferably before the cat first comes into heat.
