Change in frequency of feeding as the dog grows

feeding dogsAs a general rule, from the weaning time (six weeks) to three months of age, a puppy should get four meals a day with an interval of about 4 to 5 hours between each meal. From 3 months to 6 months, three meals are enough, and from 6 months to one year, two meals should suffice. After the age of one year, a dog does well even on one meal daily. For the one meal, noon is the best time, so that the dog has plenty of time to relieve himself afterwards and does not have to go out during the night. Try and supplement the food with treats several times a day.
Regarding the quantity of food, it is very difficult to specify the amount which should be fed to dogs to maintain an optimum body weight and condition, as even in the same or different breeds, there are great differences in individual requirements. There can be a vast variation in the amount of food needed to maintain proper weight and health.
