Cichlid fish are a member of cichlidae family and are popular for their aggressive behavior. Some of the cichlid species are - angelfish, Oscar, Jack Dempsey and Discus. Keeping cichlid fish as a pet can be difficult task but with if you have proper knowledge about cichlid care then it is possible to tame these notorious creatures. Some of the cichlid fish care guidelines is mentioned below.

Cichlid fish care guidelines:

1. Cichlid fish tank: It is important for you to provide spacious tank to your pet cichlid fish to swim in. The female/ male ratio in the tank should be 3:1 in order to avoid fight between them. The species that are aggressive should accompany them as they can kill other species. The species that can fight for its food and defend itself from the cichlid fish should be accompanied. The ideal temperature for cichlid fish is 76-80F at times it can be slightly higher at 82F. The tank should not be exposed to direct sunlight as it may increase the water temperature. Efficient heater should be adjusted in it to regulate temperature. Water plants should be avoided in their tank as they shave a habit of digging up everything. You should use rocks that are firmly fixed at the bottom of the tank.

2. Water conditions for Cichlids: It is important for one to maintain quality of the cichlid tank in order to prevent it form diseases. The pH level of the water should be kept between the levels of 7.4-8.4. Efficient filtration system is important for better flow of water. Sponge filter is good option for small tanks. Water of cichlid tank should be change once in every month. Water temperature of the tank should be kept low as it will help in keeping a check on the hyperactive nature of the cichlid fish moreover it will lower their aggression.

3. Cichlids fish food: They should ideally fed on food comprising spirulina and vegetables that are easy to digest as cichlid fish takes a long time to digest its food. This fish love to eat non stop. You should feed them small quantities after regular interval. You can also offer commercial food to your pet cichlid fish.
