Diet given to a dog during pregnancy

a dog during pregnancyPregnancy is the most critical stress period in the life of a dog. During the first three weeks, the growth of the pups being comparatively slow, she should get her normal balanced diet. From the fourth week onwards, she will need greater food intake, especially proteins. Vegetables should be included in the diet, not only for their nutritional value, but also for their fiber and laxative effect. An adequate amount of vitamins and minerals are also needed by the dog during this period. The female develops an enormous appetite as the pregnancy progresses. Thus it is better to divide the food into two or three meals. As her uterus enlarges with the development of her pups, her daily rations can be divided into three or four meals to avoid overloading her stomach at one time.
