Dog Jumping on People
This habit can be a nuisance and an embarrassment to the owner, especially when ladies are present. Such boisterousness is likely to spoil clothes, ladder stockings, and so on and is generally due to over-excitement on the part of the dog, who wants to be taken notice of immediately, which is natural with normal young dogs who really only want to play. This bad habit must be corrected as early as possible because someone may get hurt. With the puppy, it is easy. All that is necessary is a sharp smack on the puppy’s side, which will knock him down, and the word ‘No’ uttered emphatically. With a larger dog the remedy has to be more forceful, and it must, of course, be done by the handler in the first instance. The action is to bring the knee up sharply into the animal’s chest every time he jumps up in front of him, and at the same time forbid the dog with the word ‘No’. It should always be done when the dog is least expecting the rebuff. If the dog should whine or become temporarily winded, so much the better; he will understand all the more quickly that he is not to jump up.
