Feeding a fish




One must know just like humans, fish also need balanced and nutritional diet to survive. Food is significant for the normal functioning of the fish. Fish require food in order to receive nutrients, vitamins for healthy growth. Fishes usually eat all types of foods but the size of food should be appropriate enough so that it can be eaten easily. They are normally fed on flakes and pellets, live foods, frozen food, meaty food, vegetable food. People should avoid feeding excess food to their fish as it may cause death of your fish. Fish also require a varied diet in order not to become bored with the same old foods.

It is significant for owner to feed appropriate size food to their fishes. It is a bad idea to feed tiny flakes of food to a great big fish, just as feeding large piece of food to a tiny fish is worthless. Generally, Owner should feed their fish twice a day with very small feed. One should offer small pinch food to their fish and then check that this is all eaten within three to five minutes.

Feeding a fish:

  1. Flakes and Pellets: It is the most common and convenient way of feeding aquarium fishes. Flakes come in different colors which contain various ingredients such as fish, roe, wheat, meat, vegetables, trace elements and vitamins. Owner should feed a small amount to their fish at any one time. Flake foods are good option for fish up to 10-13cm in length. However, they require something else as supplement when they grow larger. Pellets have almost the same ingredients as flake foods but are more considerable.
  2. Live foods for fishes: Many live foods for fishes must be available at your nearby pet store. Live food such as - water fleas, brine shrimps, small crustaceans are good for fishes.
  3. Frozen Foods for fishes: Freeze dried food acts as nutritious supplements to flake foods. A freeze-dried food includes Mystics, Pacific shrimp, Tubbier worms, krill and plankton. One should store these foods in the freezer and thaw out as much as they require each day.
  4. Vegetable Foods for fishes: Many fish enjoy vegetable such as blanched lettuce; garden peas with the skins popped off, and even baked beans in their diet. Make sure to remove them from the tank quickly if the fish ignore them.

Overfeeding fishes can have devastating effects and can cause death of fishes as well. Therefore, it is significant for one to keep a regular eye on his fish’s diet to prevent it.
