Foal Feeding Requirements

For the first few weeks the foal will drink its dam’s milk, but should be allowed to experiment with her concentrate feeds if it wishes. It cannot digest hay at this age. Gradually, as it easts more of her feed it should be fed concentrates of its own. It needs a high concentrate diet with plenty of protein and your vet will advice on exactly what levels to feed. Gradually it will take hay and, of course, grass, copyng its dam and maybe spitting things out at first. All feed should be top quality and absolutely clean and there should be a permanent supply of water available.
