Horse diseases
Horses easily get infected by several types of diseases due to change in weather, unhygienic food, dust, dirty water or unhygienic place. It is significant for one to provide their horse proper care to main their beauty and majesty.Therefore, it is important for horse owners to have the basic knowledge about the diseases often found in horses. At times Veterinarians live far away or are unable to answer to a call immediately, so owners should try to handle a sick horse on their own.
Common horse diseases:
1. Horse Colic: It is one of the most common diseases found in a horse. The common symptoms of disease are - Rolling excessively, Sweating, Pawing, Kicking at a belly, Looking at or biting belly, Change in attitude, or depression, Lack of appetite, Unable to defecate, Little or no gut sounds, Sitting like a dog or lying down, restlessness, or lying down, getting up, lying down again. It attacks the gastrointestinal system. It is one of the most hazardous horse diseases. It is important to consult the veterinarian if your horse is suffering from this disease. To prevent this disease one must provide hygienic water and feed to his horse.
2. Horse Laminitis: It is commonly known as horse founder. The common symptoms of this disease are – heavy sweating, trembling, stiffly walk, anxiety and hot feet. It is usually caused because of largely sugar intake. If your horse is suffering from this dilemma then it requires immediate veterinary attention. It becomes difficult for horse to walk without pain. One can prevent this disease by regularly washing the feet of horse after riding.
3. Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis: It is cause in the central nervous system of a horse. The common symptoms of this disease are – headshaking, facial paralysis, abnormal eye movement, inability to stand up, blindness and collapse. Horses suffering from this disease might move as if he is drunk, uncertain of every foot step that he puts ahead. It requires immediate attention of vet as it can turn severe if left untreated.
4. Equine Influenza: This type of disease is quite common in horses. The common symptoms of this disease are - fever, dry coughs, increased mucus production, running nose and depression. It requires immediate treatment by vet as the virus of this disease can spread rapidly through an infected horse. Fortunately, equine influenza generally disappears on its own after a week or two. Make sure that your horse is not ridden during this time.
5. Strangles: This type of horse disease is a highly contagious, that can spread rapidly throughout an infected person. The common symptoms of this disease are – swelling of the lymph nodes under the jaw, nasal discharge, fever, fast breathing and lethargy. Make sure that you wash your hands thoroughly after touching an infected horse.
For preventing horse from certain diseases it is essential for one to monitor his horse activities daily. It will definitely help one to maintain his horse health properly.
