How Should I Store My Dog’s Food?

Store dry dog food in a moisture proof dark container to minimize loss of nutrients and to prevent them from attracting rodents, roaches, and crickets. Keep this container at room temperature, because high summer temperatures also have a detrimental effect on the food. Use the food before the expiration date that is printed on the sack. If feeding semi moist food, keep the packages in the cupboard, fold the top of a partially used pack and finish it as rapidly as possible. They don’t require refrigeration, but will dry out quickly after opening. Once a can has been opened, keep the remaining food in the refrigerator with a plastic lid firmly in place to prevent the food from drying out and to keep the smell of the dog food from permeating the fridge. Use the contents of the can as soon as possible.
