How to Find a Parrot

Parrots may be purchased from breeders or dealers or from a private seller. Buying privately requires extra caution. Individual owners do riot usually wish to part with tame and talking birds. Afterall, if you had a loving parrot who spoke would you offer him for sale?Unfortunately, many “broncos”(parrots which are almost impossible to tame) move from family to family with their dispositions getting worse with each change.
Although advertising of parrots is limited, ads do appear on a regular basis in many newspapers. Of course the shopper can also run his own “parrot wanted” ad. Because of the danger of theft many breeders keep a rather low profile and one maybe pleasantly surprised to find sources surprisingly close to home.

I would recommend that anyone who has limited experience with birds try to have an experienced friend accompany them when they shop. Buying From a reputable dealer is costly but you will get the benefit of the dealer’s experience and advice as well as the security of doing business with someone who has are reputation to protect and who will stand behind his livestock if there is a reasonable complaint.
The ideal way to select a parrot dealer or breeder is by recommendation from a satisfied customer. Ask a friend or associate who has purchased a parrot about the dealer he or she used. Was the bird healthy? Did it live up to the claims of the seller? Did your friend enjoy doing business with the seller? Is he or she happy with the purchase or are there misgivings? Don’t be afraid to pile on the questions. Parrot owners generally like to talk about their pets and usually are glad to help a novice learn the ropes.
