How to Take a Bird Temperature
Different species of birds have different body temperature ranges. The normal temperature for most birds 
ranges from 40°C (104°F) to 42°C (108°F). Birds lose body heat quickly when debilitated and may deform hypothermia (low body temperature). Those birds with a temperature less than 38°C (100°F) should bewared until their normal temperature has been reached. Birds also suffer from heatstroke.
- Shake the mercury down to below 38°C (100°F) and smear the thermometer with a non-irritant lubricant, such as Vaseline.
- Insert the thermometer into the bird’s cloacae (the cavity through which droppings and eggs are passed) to about 0.75cm (0.5in).
- Withdraw the thermometer after one to two minutes and check the reading.
- Clean the thermometer with disinfectant, and store in suitable container.
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
Keep in mind a household clinical thermometer is only useful to measure a bird’s normal temperature or below. Overheating has to judged by the symptoms displayed by the bird.
