Krills




Krill are an important part of Antarctic food chains. These small crustaceans feed on microscopic plants and animals, and are eaten by whales, seals, birds, and fish. Krill live in the Antarctic Ocean, where they form gigantic swarms close to the water’s surface. these can contain 25 billion animals.

The scientific name of Krill is Euphausia superba. Its average length is about  1 1/2 inches (4 cm). It lives in the open sea and is widely distributed in southern ocean. Its eggs are shed near the surface; larvae are planktonic, developing first in deeper water. It feeds on planktonic plants and animals.
