News and Salamanders
The newts and salamanders are tailed amphibians. The nets are commonly being thought of as aquatic, and the salamanders, while recognized as liking damp conditions, being the more terrestrial relatives. Salamanders are found in rivers, streams, swamps and ditches as well as in ponds and moist woodlands. Although often mistaken for lizards, salamanders have smooth, moist, non-scaly, skin. Most have four toes on their front feet and five on their hind feet, make no sound and neither do they have ears.
Both newts and salamanders are popular as pets and are, on the whole, fairly undemanding creatures.
There are three main families from this order whose representatives are found in captivity. The mole salamanders, of which the Axolotl is perhaps the best known example, and the woodland salamanders are almost exclusively North American, while the true salamanders are more cosmopolitan, hailing from Europe and Asia as well as North America.
