The parrot fish is a member of scaridae or scarus family and is mostly found in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. Parrot fish forms a parrot-like beak with which they rub algae from coral and rocky substrates. There are several different types of parrot fish and the maximum size varies extensively within the family. Generally, the parrot species can grow up to 30 to 40 cm in length. Bump head parrot fish can grow up to 100 cm in length. The color of parrot fish varies with species. 1. Tank for parrot fish: Parrot juvenile fish require 30 gallons tank to stay in but for adult a 55gallons tank is a perfect option. This fish like slow to moderately moving water with an efficient water filtration system. You should change 20 -25% of water every week. It is important for you to maintain water quality in the tank. Cloudy water can cause death of your beloved fish. Low and moderate light should be provided to parrot fish in their tank. Bright lights should be avoided in their tank. Owner can decorate their parrot fish tank with plants but make sure that the plant you place in your fish tank is not poisonous.
2. Food for parrot fish: parrotfish are omnivores and love to feed on all kinds of live food. Flakes and pellets are the best option to serve parrot fish. You can occasionally serve brine, blood worms and shrimps to your pet parrot fish. You can serve guppies and gold fish to parrot fish as it is rich in proteins.
3. Breeding parrot fish: It is difficult to differentiate between male and female parrotfish. The only difference between the male and female parrot specie is that male parrot fish have ink color around their throat. Both male and female will engage in mating process and after that female parrotfish will lay its eggs in the corner of the tank. The eggs of parrot fish are mostly infertile. Therefore it is advisable to pair them with non- hybrid fish for efficient breeding of parrot fish.
