Keeping pigeon as pet can be an exciting and pleasing hobby. Pigeons are gentle birds that flourish on each others company. The cooing and laughter of pigeons are joyful addition to anyone. Like all birds they require specific care needs that should be met. Pigeon are those pets that will seek out affection from their human family. Pigeon care tips:
1. Housing for pigeons: It is important for owner to provide wide cage than a high one to his pet pigeon. Make sure that the cage is big enough for the pigeon to be able to stretch its wings fully. The cage should be located in a secure place where dogs, cats and other pets have no access. Keep the pigeon cage away form drafts, heat sources and fans. Pigeons usually prefer to have their cage partially covered. The cage shouldn’t get hot and there should be enough air flow the cage. Proper ventilation is very important in the cage.
Pigeons should be provided with flat surfaces to perch on as they lick to perch. it is important to maintain cleanliness in pigeon cage. You can clean the pigeon cage with vinegar. It is not poisonous to birds and removes odors and stains.
2. Food for pigeons: Pigeons require a mixed grain rations with a basic 12-15% protein. Pet stores may carry good pigeon mixes, mostly pet sores do. The main ingredients of pigeon food are wheat, peas yellow and green and barley. You can add millet, lentils, safflower seeds, flax seeds, corn, soy beans, oats and groats and occasionally you can add sesame seeds and brown rice in your pet pigeon diet. Pigeon grit is significant in pigeon’s digestion. A mix of salts and minerals, oyster shells and charcoal is important for pigeon. Another food option that you can serve to your pigeon is pellets then the grit is not necessary as it is included in the pellet diet. Once or twice a week you can serve your pigeon some greens. Pigeon’s favorite foods are carrot cut up in small pieces, kale and spinach. Raw unsalted peanuts is another favorite snack of pigeons.
3. Nutrition for pigeons: Pigeons that are kept indoors should be provided with vitamin, mineral supplement with vitamin D3. You can found good pigeon supplement at a pet store or pigeon supply store.
4. Pigeon bath: Twice a week you should privde a low catpan filled two inches with water for a bath to pigeon. In which you can also add a tablespoon of vinegar as it makes the feathers of pigeon really shiny and prevents contamination of the water.
