Red Hermit Crab




Red hermit crabs have soft abdomen unlike most crabs. They use old shells from other animals for protection. They grow during their adult life, and often have to move to a bigger shell. The red hermut crab is one of the largest species of crabs. It uses its long claws to catch small animals and pick up pieces of food.

The scientific name if red hermit crab is Dardanus megister. It can grow up to 10 inches (25 cm) long. It lives in the coral reefs and is widely distributed in the Indian Ocean, western Pacific Ocean. The female carries eggs under abdomen; larvae are free floating. It eats small invertebrates; and remains of animals.
