Serval (Leptailurus)
The serval is a long-legged, ewe-necked cat of equatorial Africa. Aninhabitant of the veldts and savannahs, it hunts birds, small mammalsand lizards. The serval’s long neck enables this odd cat to see over the tall grasses. Also, its upright ears and keen hearing help to detect thepresence of unseen prey. The serval hunts by day or night, utilising itsunique anatomical equipment. The basic coat colour is yellowish-greyto bright orange, with black spots on the body, lower parts of the legsand flanks. The upper parts of the legs have broad bands or stripes.
