Named after the existing Mexican state, the Chihuahuas are the smallest dog breed in the world.
Origin of Chihuahua
Many theories surround the origin of the Pre-Columbian nations considered these dogs to be holy, therefore used them in sacred rituals. Some historians believe that the Chihuahuas belonged to the island of Malta in the Mediterranean. Others have noted the depiction of a similar kind of dog in Renaissance paintings. Another theory suggests that around 200 years ago, the Chihuahua was brought to Mexico from China.
Type and anatomy
Two varieties of Chihuahua are recognized, the long coat and the smooth coat. The latter is also referred to as the short haired one. The height of a Chihuahua ranges from 6 to 10 inches. However some can grow up to 12 to 15 inches. Chihuahuas weigh no more than 3 kilograms. The average lifespan of this dog is 10 to 15 years.
Two types of Chihuahuas are recognized, the one with the long coat and the one with the smooth coat, also referred to as the short haired. Smooth coat however does not imply soft hair. Long haired Chihuahuas are smooth to touch compared to other ones. Chihuahuas are available in a variety o colors, ranging from fawn to red, to blue and black.
Chihuahua temperament
Defensive by nature, Chihuahuas can get easily provoked, therefore not recommended to be kept as pets at home with small children. The breed is extremely loyal to its owners and sometimes even tends to be over protective towards the former. Somewhat clannish in nature, Chihuahuas do not gel well with other dog breeds. They crave for attention and affection from their owners.
Living conditions
These little dogs are good for apartment life. They prefer warm cozy weather. However, contrary to their size, Chihuahuas need large enough space to move around.
Diet and exercise
As active dogs, Chihuahuas need food that is rich in calorie and protein content. Protein ensures that their body remains fit and healthy. It is recommended that u feed an older Chihuahua, food that is rich in antioxidants. However be careful, as not overfeed it. Although they might seem tempting and cute to carry about, they need regular exercise to remain physically fit. A daily walk is recommended. They also enjoy a god romp in an open area such as a backyard.
Diseases in Chihuahua
Chihuahuas are prone to certain diseases such as slipped stifle, rheumatism and gum problems. They can be easily affected by glaucoma or corneal dryness. Chihuahuas gain weight easily, so avoid toxic products such as fertilizers and chocolates as these can poison the dog.
So it is advisable that you give them roper care and provide them with adequate nutrition.
