Many of the world’s largest whales are known as baleen whales. The term doesn’t actually refer to their size. Although some baleen whales are giants, the Pygmy right Whale is a baleen whale, and is barely twice the size of a dolphin. In fact, baleen whales are grouped together because of the way they eat. Baleen is a substance inside their mouths that helps catch food. You can think of baleen as an enormous comb with fine, hairy teeth. Baleen whales either swallow or strain ocean water through their mouths; the baleen inside traps the tiny sea creatures that these whales like to eat.
