Tortoise Accommodation

Tortoise are voracious eaters of plants and garden produce, so care must be taken to keep them from flower beds and kitchen gardens. If they are allowed to roamed on the lawn. this should be wired off with netting of 23 - 30 cm (9-12 in) height, remembering that tortoises are great climbers and that their weight will soon bend wire down if it is not well supported.

In the absence of fencing, a large wooded pen can be provided which again should be surrounded by wire mesh. However, this type of construction must be portable so that it can be moved to different parts of the garden. Indeed, the type of run used for domestic rabbits often proves most suitable.

Because of tortoises’ love of climbing, a rockery, albeit transportable, within the enclosure, would be greatly appreciated.

A shelter must be provided, offering your pet protection from rain, wind and sun, A wooded box resembling a small dog kennel would be ideal, raised a little off the ground with a small ramp up to the entrance. Provide lots of hay and dry leaves for bedding and hang a piece of sacking over the entrace at night to add warmth.
