Tortoise Feeding
Tortoises are generally thought of as vegetarian, but the Hermann’s Tortoise, in particular, enjoys tackling scraps of bones and meat put out for the birds; even fish in the diet is appreciated and sometimes a little canned dog or cat food.
Obviously, fresh water must at all times be available and is best kept in a shallow dish sunk level with the surrounding ground in a shaded part of the garden. If it sis not sunk the tortoise is liable to knock it over, and he will in any case probably bath in it.
Your tortoise will not eat slugs or insects but will enjoy lettuce, cabbage, sprouts, spinach, watercress, dandelions, tomatoes, peas, peapods, clover, apples and strawberries, in fact almost anything that can be found in the garden. Don’t feed rhubarb leaves. They relish brown bread and jam and no doubt owners will find other delicacies that their individual pets like, but all too often when it is found that a creature has a penchant fro a particular food, the owner feeds it on little else to the detriment of the pet;s health. Remember to supply a a varied diet at all times.
