White-Sided Dolphin
The White-sided Dolphin lives in the cool sub-arctic warers of the Northern Atlantic and pacific Oceans. Although affected by water pollution in parts of its range, it is still fairly common.
White-sided Dolphins are about the same size as Common Dolphins. There are two distinct species of White-sided Dolphin, each with its own coloration and weight. The Pacific White-sided Dolphin has a pale gray streak along th side of its body, and weighs between 185 and 330 pounds (85 to 150 kilograms). The Atlantic White-sided Dolphin has a much thicker gray stripe on its side, along with a distinctive yellow band near the tail. In addition, it is very much heavier.
White-sided Dolphins, which often travel in large groups of a thousand or more, are fast swimmers and very active above the water. They love to bow or wake ride, and have a havit of appearning quickly, almost out of nowhere. They are also known for their breaching, somersaulting and porpoising.
Did you know that the White-sided Dolphin is sometimes mistaken for a shark? White-sided Dolphins have a habit of swimming just below the ocean surface of the water, just like sharks do. May be they’ve seen the movie “Jaws.”
