Dog PancreatitisMany theories have been suggested as to the cause of pancreatitis, but other than injury and tumors we have few answers. It usually occurs in middle-aged, overweight dog and is obviously painful experience for a dog. Necrosis or decomposition occurs, releasing into the gland enzymes that should be released into the small intestine by way of ducts. The enzymes literally digest parts of the pancreas. Initially there is vomiting with acute abdominal pairs followed by depression, shock, and even convulsions in some cases. This is a problem requiring hospitalization and intensive care to relieve pain and to maintain hydration. With treatment the survival rate is good if the rare neoplasm is not present. If damage is excessive, it may be necessary to administer pancreatic enzymes to the dog with each meal for the rest of its life. In young dogs under two years of age there is a less common form of this disease called juvenile pancreatic atrophy, which requires the same enzyme addition to the diet as the chronic form. The pancreatitis is actually a condition of severe rate of swelling of the pancreas. The incidence of pancreatitis is quite common among dogs and can be easily recovered under proper treatment.
