Dog Septicemia

Dog SepticemiaDog Septicemia is blood poisoning; and most people understand that this is a bacterial infection of the blood running rampant through the vascular system. Today broad-spectrum antibiotics usually cure such a problem in dog before the laboratory can identify one of the many microorganisms capable of causing it.

Septicemia is actually a systemic disorder which occurs due to the invasion of the bacteria. The disease triggers due to the onset of bacterial infection in the body of the dog. In septicemia the bacteria some how manages to get in contact with the main blood stream. The bacteria produce certain toxins and when they reach the blood they get carried away to various organ systems leading to poisoning of the entire body and the septic shock.

The bacteria may attack various parts of the body and causes a variety of skin diseases. The bacterial infection occurring in the navel or the umbilicus generally finds their way to the lungs causing pneumonia. The release of the toxins by the bacteria may lead to the development of the various types of diseases like in the organs, muscles, joints and such.

The following are certain body parts that are commonly attacked by the bacterial invasion.

  • One of the most common body parts that gets affected by bacteria infection is the respiratory system. Almost 50% of the septicemia occurring dogs affects the respiratory organs.
  • The gastrointestinal system is another part of the body which is often the victim of the septic. The side effects that show up when the gastrointestinal organ gets damaged are like diarrhea or enteritis.
  • The musculoskeletal system is another body part which is often under the attack of the foreign toxins. The bacteria also attack the growth plate of the bones along with the thin membrane of the joints which is known as the Synovial membrane. The side effects that mainly crop up due to the incidence of the septic in the gastro-intestinal tract are the one like the bone or the Osteomyelitis (infection in bones) and septic arthritis of joint infection.
  • The nervous system may also get affected. One of the mainly effects of the attack of the bacteria in the brain is the incidence of meningitis or the infection in the brain.

Sometimes in case of the incidence of the umbilical infection, the infection might not be visible from the exterior side. So, as a pet owner you are required to be quite cautious regarding the various symptoms of the disease the dog would be showing up. You are also recommended to take your dog to a vet clinic for a routine check up. To equip your self to detect the incidence of such diseases, the following are the signs that may help you.

  • You would find your dog to be highly depressed.
  • The otherwise active dogs now having the tendency of sleeping and resting quite often.

The best possible way to keep your dog way from the attack of the bacteria is by providing a hygienic life style. Keep the skin and the residence of your dog clean and germ free keeping to advantage for the bacteria to grow and multiply.
