Angel Fish Disease Columnaris

Angel Fish Disease ColumnarisColumnaris is a disease that is mostly caused to angel fish through the gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium Chondrococcus columnaris. The bacterium has had its name changed to Flexibacter columnaris, then to Cytophaga columnaris and then to Flavobacterium columnare. This disease is known by two names i.e. Mouth fungus and body fungus. It looks like a fungus attack on the mouth on the fish. Initially, grey or white wool like line takes place around the lips and later it forms short tuffs similar to fungus developing from the mouth. It should be treated as early as possible as it can be deadly if not treated at an early age.

Fish suffering from Columnaris usually have white spots on its mouth, edges of scales, and fins. Cotton growth on fish’s mouth can eat away its mouth while making it difficult to eat. Fish might face problems in breathing if it will be suffering from columnaris. The gills' filaments will crumble as the bacteria attacks them and the fish will start breathing hastily due to lack of oxygen.

It is usually caused because of the following reason such as - Stressed fish, poor water quality, inadequate diet and rough handling. Therefore, one should take proper steps to prevent their angelfish from columnaris disease. It’s very important to treat this disease in its earliest stages if you really want to avoid further losses. Several types of antibiotics are used for the treatment of this. It is recommended not to feed the fish while treatment.

One can also cure it by copper sulphate as it is considered to be a best way to cure this disease. Chlormycetin is also used for treating columnaris. This should be directed using 10 to 20 milligrams of chlormycetin per litre of aquarium water. Another successful method to treat mouth fungus is to feed fish with food, which contains oxytetracyline. However, it may be that the fish has stopped eating. If your fish has stopped eating then the best way of treatment is to use an antibiotic such as penicillin. Some of the common antibiotics for the treatment of this disease in angelfish are - Erythromycin, Tetracycline, Furan drugs, Potentiated sulfonamides, Sulfaisoxazole.

One can prevent his fish from this disease by keeping the water of a tank clean and by avoiding the accumulation of organic material in your fish tank. Make sure that you remove the dead and infected fish immediately from the tank. Try to use clean equipments in your fish tank as infected equipments can be the reason for the columnaris disease. Ensure that the net you are using in your fish tank is disinfected and soft. Moreover, check that there is adequate in your aquarium Remember that overstocking can also be the cause of columnaris disease in angelfish. So, make sure that your fish tank contains a sufficient amount of fishes.
