Barb Aquarium Fish
Barb fish belongs to the species - Barbus. They are a member of cyprinidae family. They are commonly found in every continent except South America. They have long cylindrical shaped body, no adipose fin, and often small barbels at the corners of the mouth. This fish is quite admired by people for their aquarium. Most of the barb fish are colorful, small, active and ideally suitable for an aquarium. There are several types of barb fish. Among the various types, rosy barb, tiger barb, cuming’s barb, striped barb, tinfoil barb are easy to maintain and breed in an aquarium.
Common aquarium barb fish:
- Tiger barb fish: it is also known as Sumatra barb fish and is one of the common types of barb that are extremely preferred for an aquarium. This fish has a red color body with bold black stripes on it that makes it look more beautiful. They are active and a lively kind of fish. They should be kept in a group of seven or more as they can turn aggressive if kept in a small group or alone. Moreover they can harass small fishes if kept in a small group. They should be accompanied with the fine gravel, plants, rocks and driftwood in the aquarium so that they can play and hide inside the aquarium. Moreover the fish tank should be spacious enough so that they can dwell their properly.
- Rosy barb fish: This fish is one of the most common fish. They don’t require heaters in aquarium as they are not tropical fish. They prefer cooler water temperature for their survival. They love to be in a group. This fish is a good option for a novice as they are hardy and peaceful. They usually eat all the food that is being offered to them. However, this fish at times bothers softer aquatic plants. Owner should offer them both plant and animal materials to eat.
- Cuming’s barb fish: They are also a best choice for an aquarium. They are quite colorful and pleasing type of fish. It has a golden body with red fins and two black spots. It is an active fish that helps to make your aquarium livelier. Make sure that your aquarium contains lots of decoration pieces and plants as this fish love to play and hide in an aquarium.
- Tinfoil barb fish: This type of fish should be kept with larger species of fish. It is recommended to keep these fish in a group otherwise they would feel stress in the aquarium.
- Striped barb: This fish has a long body as compared to other fish that are mentioned here. They have a yellow body with black horizontal lines on it. Make sure that you provide plenty space to them so that they can swim properly.
One should change the water of their tank frequently in order to maintain the longevity of their barb fish in an aquarium. Moreover, it is significant for one to provide enough space for fish in an aquarium to swim.
Most of the aquarists keep barb fishes as they find them hardy, beautiful and easy to maintain and care for. Barbs are tolerant fishes and they can adjust themselves easily in the given varying conditions. These aquarium fishes are kind by nature and have the capacity to breed easily. While you are placing barbs in aquarium it is advisable to keep them in large schools or in groups.
Keep a minimum 6 to 8 barb fish together or even more than that as they love to be in groups and which is also good for their healthy growth. There are few barbs which are aggressive by nature. While you are placing the fishes in the aquarium, be careful not to mix the peaceful barbs and the aggressive barbs together.
