Fish For a Garden Pond
Garden fish pond is one of the most attractive and beautiful ways to change the entire emergence of your yard. Fishes helps to add beauty, color and charm to your pond. Although they are the best and easiest way to enhance the beauty of your home, they do require significant care and maintenance.
In various regions, fish can spend the cold season in garden ponds. But at times when the pond freezes across the entire surface, it is advisable to bring the fish indoors. This is because, the cold tolerant fish can get suffocated in small pond when the gas exchange between the air and water is stopped by the ice layer.
Garden pond fish need their own specially created habitat. Consider the space the fish requires for its growth. While you get the fish, check its habitat and then place it in suitable water condition.
There are wide ranges of fishes that are suitable for garden ponds. It is difficult to mention the names of all garden pond fish here therefore, few common garden pond fishes are stated below.
Common fish for garden pond:
- Shubunkin goldfish: This type of gold fish is one of the best fish for a garden pond. It has a very striking color pattern as compared to other gold fishes. the base of color of this fish can be blue, violet and pearl with orange, gold, red, white, black, grey and brown patches on it. They require plenty of space to swim in. Make sure that your garden pond contains contain ample amount of plants and efficient filters in it. This fish is good in eating bottom feed that helps to keep the fish pond clean. Shubunkin reaches to a maximum length of 10 inches and is a very calm fish. It doesn’t harm its tank mates.
- Koi fish: Koi fish are quite admired by people for their garden ponds because of its alluring looks. It is quite majestic and spectacular fish. It is mostly found in all parts of the world except the colder region. It is a hardy fish therefore; it makes a good choice for garden ponds. They are mostly admired because of their longevity. This fish can be white, red, blue, yellow and black in color or any combination of these colors. The major disadvantage of keeping this fish in a garden pond is that it has a ravenous feel for plants. So one should not put plants in his garden pond if he is keeping a koi fish in it.
- Comet goldfish: It is one of the most common types of fish for garden ponds. The comet goldfish can be red, white, orange, black and yellow in color. This fish is distinguished by its long single tail. These fishes mostly grown up to 10 inches and it can live up to 14 years. They are quite peaceful moreover, they doesn’t spoil the plants of the pond.
- Rainbow dace fish: They are also a good choice of fish for the garden pond as they are quite colorful. They are quite calm as compared to other fishes. Moreover, they don’t harm plants of the garden pond. The maximum size of this fish is 4 inches that it makes it more appropriate for the small garden ponds.
There are many other fish that one can keep in his garden pond. Whatever fish you own make sure, that you give adequate and efficient care to them. Ensure that the water of your garden pond is clean and filters of the pond are working efficiently.
It is important to provide them relaxing environment as these fish prevent you from the infuriating mosquitoes during the summer.
