Fish For a Planted Tank

Though planted tank looks more aesthetically pleasing, but they are not good for several types of fishes. Fishes might cause damage to plants in an aquarium. Any aquarium which contains plants in it will definitely have some algae in it. Algae are hazardous for some of the fishes, whereas there are some fishes that are kept in a planted tank to help clean up the algae. There are lots of such fishes that can be kept in a planted fish tank. It is difficult to mention the name of all such fishes that can be kept in a planted fish tank. Therefore, we are mentioning some common fishes for a planted tank here.

Common fish for a planted tank:

1. Siamese Algae eaters: It is a great choice for a planted fish tank. They stay comparatively small. The average length of this fish is about 3-4 inches. They help to clean the algae of most plants without damaging the plant. Try to be careful if you have delicate or thin plants in your aquarium as fish can cause some damage to the plants when they get fully grown. They love to eat algae and leftover food in the tank floor. They are quite aquarium friendly as they are peaceful in nature.
2. Otocinclus Catfish: It is also a good choice for heavily planted tanks. This fish doesn’t spoil plants of the tank. Therefore, it makes the best option if you are thinking of planting your tank. They are mostly used in groups of 6 or more. Make sure that if you have profoundly planted aquarium then you must put one otocinclus fish for every gallon of water. These fish required enough algae in their diet. If the algae in your tank are not enough then you can add sinking pellets, algae pellets, zucchini, cucumber and lettuce in your tank for the fish to eat. This type of fish should be kept with smaller peaceful fish as large fish can eat it.
3. Plecostomus fish: It is also known as Armor Plated Catfish. It is one of the most popular algae eating fish and a good option for the planted tank. They require more algae in their diet. If your tank contains fewer algae then you can add sinking pellets, algae pellets, zucchini, cucumber and lettuce in your tank for them to eat. It is quite friendly in nature and can easily get along with any other fish you put in the tank.
4. Algae eating shrimp: This fish is also a good option for planted tank. They eat black Brush algae, hair algae, and the normal soft green algae in the tank. This fish should be kept with small and peaceful fish as it can be eaten up by large fish.
5. Blue tetra: This fish also makes a good choice for planted tank as it will prosper if adequate hiding places are provided to them. It doesn’t spoil plants of the tank while hiding and playing around it. Ensure that it should not be kept with a fish that has long, flowing fins as that makes it frustrated.
