Freshwater aquarium requires a lot of material for different types of fish. It is important for the owner to understand what all are the requirements of freshwater aquarium, whether it requires warm water or cold water, high Ph or low Ph, hard water or soft water. This is required only if you are attempting to breed the fish, or you are planning on keeping a very sensitive fish. Before choosing all the items and the fish for the freshwater fish tank it is important for the owner to keep in mind the stability of the atmosphere.
Don't be deceived into thoughts that the smaller the freshwater aquarium the easier it will be to handle. Therefore, the amount of oxygen offered is determined mostly by the amount of surface area of the freshwater aquarium. Water movement at the surface helps to increase the oxygen in freshwater fish tank and will also help in increasing the stocking capacity as well as the health of the fish.
Tap water consists of mineral salts that make the water hard. Try to use test kits that are usually available at the aquarium store to check the hardness of water in the aquarium. The best way to eradicate hardness from the aquarium water is to pass it through a suitable softener. One can lower the carbonate hardness in water by boiling it and one can also pass it through a filter.
To harden water, add sodium bicarbonate or magnesium sulphate in small quantities, so that modifications occur very steadily. At time hasty changes can prove hazardous for your fish. If one wants to calculate the hardness of water of aquarium then calculate the quantity of mineral that are melted in it. One can measure the hardness of water in aquarium by two scales i.e. DH and KH. DH is used to calculate the calcium oxide minerals present in the water of aquarium whereas KH scale is used to calculate the amount of carbonate and bicarbonate salts present in the water of aquarium.
One can also mix small quantities of hard water with large amounts of fresh water to soften the water as it will help to reduce the hardness of the water. When you are converting hard water into soft water in the fish tank itself then make sure that you do it slowly as hasty changes can be the reason of fish’s death.
