Properly feeding your fish aids in their good health and also assists you to maintain your aquarium. Fish are quiet and beautiful water creatures and their maintenance is not a Herculean task.

Buy suitable fish food :

Find out whether your fish is an omnivore, a herbivore, or a carnivore. Most fish can be fed flake food or pellets, but some species have specialized diets. You may want to buy several types of food. A majority of fish can be successfully fed at pellets or flake foods but some of the species require specialized diet. You may need to buy a variety of fish food.

Try and find out the time at which your fish need to eat. It may be during day-time in majority of cases. Other cases are of night-time eaters like cardinal fish and imperial pleco who prefer eating after it is dark.Sprinkle the food evenly in the fish tank :

Where does your fish eat?

Find out where your fish prefers to eat. Some will like to eat from the food spread at the top of the tank but there is ample amount of the tank inhabitants which require food that is sunk to the bottom of the tank/aquarium.

Feed fish in small portions :

You have to pay attention about feeding your fish in small quantities. Feed your fish as much as it can eat in 2 to 3 minutes. If you will put excess food in the tank, it will pose problem to your pretty pets. ladle out the excessive material.

Feed your fish regularly :

Take care to feed your fish on a standard plan. If there are no herbivores, you can feed your fish once a day. In case of herbivores, they require food as their stomachs are smaller and they empty at a fast rate.

Type of food for fish :

Provide your fish with frozen, freeze dried; live foods to improve their health. From time to time you can add vegetables to the diet of your fish. Give them fresh food. Flake foods lose their nutritional value very soon. Feeding them on stale food will make them vitamin starved and they will become prone to diseases.

Tips for feeding fish :

  1. Size of a fish’s stomach is same as its eye. So, feed your fish accordingly.
  2. More than one type of fish food may be required if you have a variety of fish. Be careful enough to buy the right type of food for every breed.
  3. If you overfeed, your fish will look bloated. Thawed, shell it, cut it into small pieces to feed. This will aid in digestive process.

Warnings regarding feeding your fish :

  1. Take care that you do not overfeed your fish. It may cause their death.
  2. Foods high in fat should be occasionally given.
  3. In case of feeding live food to your fish, make sure it is parasite free and healthy.
