Common Pond fish diseases:
  1. Fish fungus: It is the most common problem encountered by the pond fish. It is seen as brown color cotton patches on the fish. It spreads rapidly on the fish’s body. This disease is mostly caused because of some environmental pollutant such as – ammonia or nitrate. There are a variety of medications available for controlling fungus in the pond. One of the most effective medications for controlling fungus is a pond salt. However, one should not use this medication, if there are no plants in the pond. It is because aquatic and submerging plants will die if exposed to the salt. The fungus cannot grow in a salty environment. It can also be prevented by regular water change, medicated food and antibiotics.
  2. Fin rot (Ichthyophthirius): This disease kills more pond fishes than any other fish disease. The common symptoms of this disease are – loosing appetite, rubbing on object in the pond, white pimples on the body and fins and rapid or heavy breathing. It can be treated with wide range of treatment. One can use Tetra medicated food, flake "D" in conjunction with copper for the treatment of this disease.
  3. Fish slimy skin: the common symptoms of this disease are – rubbing, jumping, clamping their fins against the body and listless and cease feeding, grey film over the body surface. It makes the fish look dull and inactive. It is mostly caused because of the bad water quality. One should use efficient filter in their pond to prevent their fishes from this disease. It is a highly contagious disease therefore, it should be treated early. It can also get treated with a remedy of malachite green. One can also try formalin and salt in their pond to eradicate this disease.
  4. Fin rot: The common symptoms of this disease are white fin edges, fray fins, exposed fin rays, blood on edges of fins, reddened areas at a base of fins, skin ulcers with gray or red margins and cloudy eyes. It is mostly caused because of the bad water quality and overstocked pond. It is treated by an antibiotic i.e. Chloromycetin or tetracycline.

The reason of mostly pond fish disease is an unkempt pond condition. Fish owner should maintain the pond properly to prevent their fishes from several diseases.
