Setting up salt water fish tank :

While choosing a tank for salt water set up, choose a larger one. It is better to have a large aquarium for the brackish water fish. In a large volume of water, temperature can be easily maintained. In case of an overdose of chemicals, large volume covers up to a certain extent. To crown, you have ample space so you can have more fish. To start with, a good size will be from 30 gallons to 90 gallons as it is tough to maintain balance in salt water tanks below the volume of 30 gallons. Coral/ aragonite sand should be there in aquarium to support a suitable pH approx. 8.2 to 8.3.Aquarium should have ample rocks and coral heads to make fish as if they are in their natural habitat.

Water in marine aquariums :

Normal tap water is not advisable for salt water fish. Many sensitive ones fail to survive in such water as tap water contains certain added chemicals. To address the problem, aquarists use either reverse osmosis of water or a blend of reverse osmosis and tap water. Adding synthetic sea salt to tap water can also solve the problem. Use a hydrometer to measure the salt content in your aquarium. If you have added excessive salt to the water, draw out some water and replace it with de-chlorinated tap water. For a majority of set-ups, the optimum density of salt is 1.026.

Diet of salt water fish :

Salt water fish are basically carnivorous. In their natural habitat, they feed on crabs, crustaceans and shrimps. If kept in an aquarium they will feed on other small fish. To avoid the loss of other pets, you have to keep them in a separate tank or provide ample food of the choice of this fish so that it would not harm other fish. These fish are required to be fed only once a day. You can train the salt water fish to feed on rich variety of frozen and fresh flesh food. Fish that prefers algae, you can give romaine lettuce or nori seaweed to it.

Heat in marine aquariums :

Salt water fish do not easily adapt to sudden changes in water temperature and chemicals as their natural environment is very stable. For good health of fish and growth of useful bacteria, a constant temperature of 82 ° F is vital which must be maintained by a suitable and good quality heater.

Filters for marine aquariums :

A vast variety of filters are available in the market that works as per the aquarium’s needs. Another aspect of filteration is keeping live rocks in your aquarium. They consist of colonized bacteria cultures. The nitrogen cycle is easily completed which eliminates ammonia and its harmful affects found in fish waste and excess food.

Light in marine aquariums :

Common fluorescent light is adequate for beginning. For advanced tanks that ask for more light, compact fluorescent light may be required. Metal halide lights are needed for coral reefs.

Setting up a marine aquarium needs a plump purse than setting up a fresh water aquarium. If you properly know salt water fish supplies, you can be happy with your healthy marine pets.
