Sick Betta Fish

Betta fish is one of the attractive fish with long and flowing fins. It is the member of Osphronemidae family. There are 50 species of betta fish but very few of them are kept by an aquarist. The suitable temperature for this type of fish is 24 – 28° C. These fish get sick very often. Therefore, one must think before purchasing this type of fish. Moreover, it is not recommended for a novice.

.One can easily avoid their betta fish getting sick. For that it is essential for you to understand whether your betta fish is sick or not. There are several hints that your fish give to you in order to make you understand of their illness. One must monitor his betta fish activities regularly. Usually betta fish swims all around in a tank. So, if you find any change in their regular activity then it is a sign of their illness. Another hint to look out is, if they are rubbing themselves up against a hard object, if you notice any such change in your fish then it’s likely that it has been infected with some disease.

Make sure that the fins of betta fish are not close to its body. If you find fins close to its body then it means that they require an immediate change in water. It usually happens because of the poor quality of water of an aquarium. So you should regularly change the water of your tank in order to keep your betta fish healthy.

Some betta fish has small white spots on their body and fins. It is caused by a parasite named ich. You must treat it as soon as possible. At times, betta fish usually gets a white cotton layer on its body and fins, which are larger than ich, which is known as fungus. It can be cured by a medicine such as Maracyn or Rid Fungus.

Sometimes fins of the betta fish looks as if they are being eaten up; this disease is known as fin rot. It should be treated immediately as it keeps on spreading to the whole body. One can cure it by adding warm and clean water, a few drops of garlic juice, and a product that replaces the slime coat, such as Stress Coat by API in an aquarium.

If the betta looks distended, it is probably constipated. One can cure it by providing a frozen pea. It should be crusted, melted and cut into tiny pieces. Feed ill betta fish with frozen pea for a few days and this will help you to notice the desired change in your fish. One can also use live, frozen, or freeze-dried daphnia in the feed of their betta fish for the same results.

One should make sure that, not to overdose the medication of their betta fish and make sure that you change the water of your fish tank regularly. Clean water will prevent your betta fish from various diseases and also, it will also help to reduce an overdose of medication. Try to avoid keeping a betta fish in bowls and vases as they require enough space to survive. Make sure that you provide enough space so that they can live peacefully. You must avoid overfeed to your betta fish as overfeeding can cause various ailments to a betta fish.
