South American Aquarium Fish

Fishes found in Amazon River are most commonly known as South American fish. South American fish are mostly shy in nature and like to hide a lot. They avoid coming in light. Following information will surely guide you about common features of some popular South American fish which can be kept in a home aquarium.

Discus South American Fish :

Discus fish is one of the most beautiful South American aquarium fish. This fish is colorful, popular as well as difficult to care for. They have circular type shape. Discus fish have large anal and dorsal fins as well as a strong lateral compression. Different types of Discus fish found are Green Discus, Brown Discus, Blue Discus, and Heckle Discus.

Aquarium requirement and Care to be taken for Discus fish:
  1. Discus fish prefers to have large and tall tanks of at least 40 inches long and 20 inches high.
  2. Aquarium water should be clean and also bacteria free.
  3. The aquarium should be arranged in dark colors and floating plants should be used to diffuse light.
  4. Discus fish remains hidden if the light is bright the whole day.
  5. There should be open area in the aquarium to swim for the fish.
  6. A food filter should be used to remove the waste.
  7. Discus fish is sensitive to pollutants like nitrates and nitrites.
  8. Discus fish can tolerate water with ph of 5.0-7.5. Water should be kept warm approximately 25-30 degree Celsius.
  9. Discus fish can be fed with live, frozen and dry foods. They can be feeded with flake foods, brine shrimp and water insects.
Angel south American Fish :

Angel fish have a disc shape with elongated fins. The dorsal and anal fins remain erect. Angel fish caudal fin is fan shaped. The eyes are often red in color and body color depends on its variety. The normal range of size is 6 inches for angel fish. Angel fish is quite hardy to handle for beginners. Different types of angel fish are Altum angel fish, Orinoco angel fish and Deep Angel fish.

Aquarium requirement and Care to be taken of Angel Fish:
  1. Angel fish prefers to have 36 inches tank.
  2. Tank should have hardy plants placed in it. Bog wood, rocks, roots can be used to make hiding space in tank.
  3. There should be adequate amount area provided for swimming to fish in the fish tank.
  4. Angel fish can tolerate water with pH 5-7.5.
  5. Water should be warm with a temperature of about 27-30 degree Celsius.
  6. Angelfish can be feed with live, flake foods, brine shrimp and mosquito larvae, bloodworms.
Dwarf Cichlids south American fish :

Dwarf Cichlids fish is quite shy and peaceful. This fish has earned a title as New World Dwarf Cichlids fish. Normal size of Dwarf Cichlids fish is 4.5 inches. Different types of Dwarf Cichlids fish are Agassiz Dwarf cichlid fish, Yellow Dwarf Cichlid, Cockatoo Dwarf cichlid.

Aquarium requirement and Care to be taken of Dwarf Cichlids fish:
  1. Dwarf Cichlids fish prefers a tank of about 24 inches
  2. Heavy vegetation should be provided in the tank.
  3. As Dwarf Cichlids fish are shy, provide hiding spaces in tank using rocks, roots, and woods.
  4. This species mostly like to stay in shade so avoid using more light.
  5. Dwarf Cichlids fish can tolerate water with pH 5.5-6.8.
  6. Water temperature should be about 24-29 degree Celsius.
  7. Dwarf Cichlids fish can be feed with flake foods, brine shrimp, Cyclops, tubifex and mosquito larvae, bloodworms.
