Betta Fish Illness

Betta Fish CareLike all other fishes beta fish may also encounter certain type of diseases from time to time. It is very essential to diagnose the disease on time and treat it properly before it spreads out to other fish of the tank or proves fatal for the fish itself. We have discussed below some of the most common type of beta fish diseases and their treatment process.

ICK: This type of disease is caused due to parasite and can be contagious. Its symptoms are white dots on all the body parts of fish including head and eyes. The fish may look less active; it feels itchy as it rubs its body against rocks of the tank. For treatment raise the water temperature to 85 F. For every gallon of water add one drop of acquarisol every single day.
The fish may take few days to get rid off it, till then it is better to keep it in a separate tank.

DROPSY: This is the most common disease of betas. This is a fatal disease and will kill your fish even before you know. Many people have the opinion that feeding black worms to the beta fish causes dropsy so avoid feeding any black worms. Its symptoms are bloated belly and raised scales on body.
It is really unfortunate that there is no drug for dropsy .All you can do is to isolate the fish so that the other fish remain safe.

TAIL OR FIN ROT: Tail or fin rot is caused by dirty water conditions in the fish tank. As a preventive measure keep the tank water always clean. Symptoms are shorter and darker tails than usual. The fish may stop eating, look pale or get clumped fins.
Use fungus eliminator for treatment. Change the water every 3 days and continue till the fish develop new fins and tail growth. This may take few weeks, so don’t panic.

VELVET: In this type of disease the fish will develop velvet like layer on the skin which is gold or grayish in color. This disease is caused by parasite oodinium which is contagious.
Its symptoms are itching in the fish, no appetite, weight loss, difficulty in breathing ,fins do not move freely, the skin starts to peel off in the advanced stages. It can be treated by raising the water temperature higher than usual. Keep the lights of the tank dim, add proper salt, add copper sulphate for 10 days and avoid carbon filtration during treatment.

SWIM BLADDER DISORDER: This is basically the result of over feeding the fishes. It is not contagious and affects the younger fishes. Its symptoms are off balancing, finding difficulty in swimming and the fish staying near the bottom of the tank.
It can be treated by not feeding the fish for few days. You should also eliminate brine shrimp from their diet.

Besides this there are some other types of diseases like fish lice, gill parasites, slime disease etc. These may be caused due to bacteria, fungus or parasitic attack. Try to keep the tank water clean and isolate the sick fish. Find out the correct treatment. In this way the illness of the Beta fish can be cured effectively.

Betta fish can easily get fungal infections as they possess large fins. If these fishes are not taken care of properly, then they might suffer from various diseases. Maintain hygienic food and water conditions for their active and healthy living. Cleaning the tank frequently and giving proper food to the fishes can keep the fishes well nourished and protect them from illness and disease. Cotton fuzz is a common disease in Betta fish. It is a type of fungus which grows on the already dead or a dying tissue. When this fungus infects the fish, a white slimy thing grows on the gills of the fish. You can treat it immediately by providing antibiotics to the fish.
