Betta Fish Care

Betta Fish CareBetta fish are also called "siamese fighting fish," famous for their interactiveness and friendliness. Taking care of Betta fish is not a tough battle, they are usually called low maintenance fish. Here are a few recommendations for betta fish care.

  • Size of the tank - Betta fish should be kept in larger tanks. It should be put in a 5 gallon tank if being put alone and in a 10 gallon tank if being put with other aquatic animals. This would help prolong its life span. The tank should be filled 80%. It should also be covered lest the Betta leaps out.

  • Changing the water of the tank - The water of the tank can be changed once a week or whenever it looks cloudy to maintain the health of the betta fish. You can replace some of the water instead of changing all the water. Do not remove the Betta fish from the water.

  • Recommended food for Betta fish – The Betta fish should be provided with "Floating flake food and Delecta," and Frozen blood worms. Its diet should also consist pellets and dried brine shrimps.

  • Compatibility with other Aquatic animals - Betta fish should not be put with other Bettas they are prone to fight therefore they are called "Siamese fighting fish." Bettas can be put with algae eaters, guppies and cat fish safely. It can also be put with American Dwarf Frog.

  • Compatibilty with Plants - No other plants other than the natural water plants (non-toxic to the fish) should be placed in the tank. If the plant root becomes brown or soggy it should be cut immediately. One of the best water plant to be used is the Chinese Evergreen as it can adapt in very low lighting and it is a hydroponic plant.Do not decorate the tank or bowl with rocks and marbles they might hurt the fish.

  • Maintenance of the Tank - The tank should be cleaned regulary, preferably every week. It should be devoid of any uneaten bits and other residues every week as the Betta fish likes clean water. Never use soap while cleaning the interiors and the plants of the, the soap residue can harm and even kill the Betta. You can use warm water to clean the tank. The tank must be maintained at a constant 78 to 82 degrees to maintain the health of the betta fish. One can even put a heater as the temprature of the water is different from the room temprature.

  • Interaction tip - Bettas recognise faces - they associate it with feeding time, so you can smile at your Betta once in a while or say "hi!" to it.

  • Betta Health - If your Betta gets sick, treat it with proper medication. such as, antibiotic, antifungal or an antiparasitic. The common diseases in betta are "Ich,"or white spot and "velvet." the common treatment to the Ich is raising temprature of the tank. In the disease called "velvet," the fish develops a velvet coating on its body. This can be treated by medicating the tank. you should see a vet if needed.

  • Precautions or Warnings for Betta care - You should remember that your fish is your living responsibility, therefore you must take a few precautions such as the Nitrogen cycle, if you are starting a new tank. If the fish is introduced before the cycle it could even die. Male Bettas should never be put with male Bettas they can even kill each other. This is a unique feature of Siamese fighter fish. Bettas are sensitive to change in temprature - a change of 2 - 3 degrees can lower its immune system. You should refrain from using distilled water. Distilled water is devoid of any minerals and nutrients which can be harmful to the Bettas. Keep female Bettas either single or in groups. Never keep the Betta fish in a tiny bowl.

Betta is a tough fish. It is said that it can survive in really filthy condition as well. But this is no reason to keep them in inhuman conditions. In order to take good care of your betta you should give it proper attention and put it in a decent environment. The above mentioned tips for Betta fish care will help you take good care of your betta.
